Family Thanks Community For ‘Extreme Makeover’ Home

LYME, N.H. — The Marshall family, of Lyme, is settling into their new home, which was built by volunteers and craftsmen for the ABC show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.”

For the first time since getting their new home, the Marshalls spoke Tuesday about the outpouring of help from volunteers and how their time away from New Hampshire helped them come together.”

The bus moved, and probably if you had pinched me, I wouldn’t have felt it because it wasn’t real,” said mother Elena Marshall. “It was so amazing.”For all the excitement of getting a new home, the Marshalls said they slept soundly in New Hampshire, exhausted from a Walt Disney World visit the show provided.

“For the whole family to be in the same place, watching fireworks at Disney, that’s special,” said father Jay Marshall.

“It was so wonderful,” Elena Marshall said. “There were ups there, were downs, but it was an experience we haven’t had an opportunity to have.

“The gifts kept on coming for the Marshalls, including new bikes and ski passes to New Hampshire resorts. A huge poster put together by children in Lyme got an emotional reaction from Elena Marshall, who whispered that it was “beautiful.

“Photos also now show the moment when the Marshalls got a chance to meet actor Patrick Dempsey. Daughter Olivia now has a picture of him placed next to her new bed.

“I saw that,” she said. “Sweet dreams tonight.”But for everything they received, the family said they wished they could have chipped in with the project. Son Beau Marshall said he hoped the outpouring of generosity would inspire others.

“You tell one or two people about it, and hopefully then they’ll do the same thing, and eventually it spreads throughout the world,” he said.The Be+ charity (pronounced “Be Positive”) also benefited from the show. The fund was started by son Cameron Marshall to raise money for Children’s Hospital at Dartmouth. Donations raised in the past week totaled more than $77,000.

It is so much fun redecorating your tween girl’s bedroom. There are a number of ways you can give your daughter a garden theme room. There are also a lot of variations. Start by painting the walls a light sky blue. Don’t forget to get her input on what she wants her room to look like.

Country Cottage Theme

A country cottage theme will be filled with flowers. Find bedding with big beautiful flowers and maybe some butterflies. Get a throw rug with cottage roses on it. Get some light curtains with flowers on them and pin the back with elegant daisy curtain tiebacks.

Wherever you have fairies, place dried flowers to give the room a garden appearance.

Butterfly Garden Theme

You can find some awesome butterfly sheets and comforters with matching rugs and curtains in major department stores and online. Add a butterfly lamp. Add some butterfly drawer pulls, hanging wall butterflies and a butterfly shaped pillow. Get wallpaper cutouts or Wallies of butterflies, and stick them all over the walls. Consider painting a grass scene around the bottom of the walls, above the baseboards to give the room a meadow appearance. If you are creative, you can also paint a pond.

Accessorize

You can really find a lot of accessories for your garden paradise. There are wastebaskets and tissue holders. There are themed tables and chairs, and lamps of all kinds. You can add garden scene posters or pictures to hang on the wall. There are some cute flower or butterfly throw pillows you can purchase, as well as hooks for the wall. You may also like butterfly tiebacks for the curtains and flower-ended curtain rods.

For the tween who has everything, there is even a green leaf chair to sit in. Use your imagination and bring the outdoors into your daughter’s room. Even if you are not artistic, there are still a lot of ready-made items you can get to turn the bedroom into a garden paradise. You can be simple, mod, or elaborate. It is your choice.

Six years ago Jay and Elena Marshall purchased what they thought was going to be their perfect home. Before they could begin tackling the onslaught of problems with their home, their 9-year old son was diagnosed with Leukemia. Despite the mounting medical bills and the looming dangers within their home, the Marshall family came together and rallied their community behind their son’s “Be Positive” campaign. The “Be Positive” campaign, named after Cameron’s blood type, has already brought in around $40,000 for the Children’s Hospital at Darthmoth and Leukemia awareness, including $3,500 Cameron raised on his own.

“It was an honor to be asked to supply my handcrafted items to this well-deserving family,” says Jennifer DeVol, owner of Bugs-n-Blooms. “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” provides safe and healthy homes for many families who face hardships but still find ways to help others, whether they be family or community members. Decorating Tips to Make Your Life Easier

Well, you’ve established a budget and chosen a theme for your nursery, now it’s time to go out and get all this stuff! Before you do, there are some things you should keep in mind.

First, if you are going to buy wallpaper, look for one that is scrubbable vinyl. If it is scrubbable, it will be easier to clean.

If you have chosen to paint, then buy colors that have a matte or satin finish. This goes for furniture, too. The shinier it is, the more likely dirt will show up sooner. Also, really dark or really light colors are also likely to make dirt more visible. So, if you don’t want to spend all your time cleaning the nursery, look for something in the mid-color range.

If you have decided to have carpets in the baby’s room, then consider a textured carpet, not to mention a stain-resistant one. A textured carpet will help disguise dirt. A stain-resistant carpet will just make your life a bit easier when your baby spills his or her juice or spits up. You might also want to consider a hardwood floor, since it is much easier to clean.

Make sure any linen you buy for your baby’s bed is machine washable. You will be doing a lot of laundry as it is. You don’t need to make your job harder by adding items that need special care. A hand-crocheted quilt may be beautiful, but it will also require a hand washing, which means it will never get washed.

You might also want to install a dimmer on the light switch in the nursery. This will allow you to control the amount of light that comes on during those midnight feedings. A bright light might make your little one think it’s time to be up and about. A softer light will help them get back to sleep quicker.
